Under the Hanging Tree - Mega Battle Scenario

Evil and chaotic armies have invaded the Talabec Borders in search of the Nemesis Crown and have left behind marks of their corrupt nature, one of the most disturbing examples of which is the Hanging Tree. Suspended from this enormous, gnarled, and ancient tree are gibbets, hanged men, and other grisly trophies left behind by the foul Beastmen. It is rumored that evil magics have been worked upon the tree and that it draws the forces of darkness to the vicinity. Local magistrates, upon hearing of the Hanging Tree, have mustered the local militia and allied forces of light to cleanse the area of all dark creatures and destroy the Hanging Tree with axe and flame.

This scenario, part of the Nemesis Crown campaign, is a multiplayer scenario, ideal for play in large clubs and game shops. It will be played in GW Hobby Centers and participating independent retailers on July 21. Click here for event information.

ARMIES
Any number of players, each with a 1,000-point army, may participate in this battle. Players should be divided into two sides – the forces of light and darkness – each with an equal number of players (or as close to it as possible).

BATTLEFIELD
The table should be 4' wide and approximately 1' long per participating player. Thus, a game involving 10 players should use a board measuring approximately 4' x 10'. A neutral game master, often a store employee or club officer, will set up the terrain to represent the wooded area near the Hanging Tree (or you can set up the board in any mutually agreeable manner). During the Deployment Phase, a scenery piece representing the Hanging Tree will be added to the board.

DEPLOYMENT

  1. The forces of darkness players may select the long table edge on which they will deploy.
  2. The forces of darkness players then place the scenery piece representing the Hanging Tree such that the center of the terrain piece is exactly 18" away from any point on the long table edge of the forces of darkness. Measure the 18" distance at a right angle from the long table edge.
  3. The forces of light then deploy the first unit within 12" of the opposite table edge.
  4. Deployment proceeds per the rules on pp. 2-3 of the Warhammer rulebook with sides taking it in turns to deploy their units. Scouts and other troops with special deployment rules may use those rules in this scenario.

Beastman GeneralWHO GOES FIRST?
The forces of light go first.

LENGTH OF GAME
The game lasts for 6 turns.

SPECIAL RULES
Multiplayer Battle. In this multiplayer battle, each side acts as a single army. Thus, all the forces of light or forces of darkness will move in the same Movement Phase and cast spells in the same Magic Phase, and so on, and will in all aspects, save three, function as one army. The first exception is that units may use the Leadership score of their own army’s General only. The second is that a character may join only units from his own army. The third is that each army will generate its own Power and Dispel Dice as normal; these dice cannot be shared by armies on the same side.

Nemesis Crown Personae. Any player may include the Nemesis Crown Persona character appropriate for his army type and take advantage of that character’s special ability in this game. Players may take Lord-level Nemesis Crown Personae, even if the points value of their armies would normally not allow it. Click here for a listing of Personae and their special rules.

The Hanging Tree. The forces of light must attempt to destroy the Hanging Tree, which should be treated as a troops model rather than a scenery piece. The Hanging Tree has the following profile and special rules.

The Hanging Tree is part of the forces of darkness, cannot move or be moved by any means, automatically passes any test based on a statistic marked with an asterisk, is Immune to Psychology, is Unbreakable, is a Large Target, is immune to Poisoned Attacks, causes Terror, has a Unit Strength of 30 (and thus is immune to Killing Blow), has no flank or rear, and has Magic Resistance (3).

VICTORY CONDITIONS
The forces of light win the battle if the Hanging Tree is destroyed by game’s end. Any other result is a victory for the forces of darkness.

TWO-PLAYER VERSION
This scenario can be easily modified for two players. Simply play the game in a 4' x 6' or 4' x 8' table, ignore the Multiplayer Battle rule, make sure each player brings at least 3,000 points of troops, and reduce the Hanging Tree’s Wounds characteristic to 10.
